20. DEATH IN THE WATER:

Something men do brings them home again and again whether to Mother or whether to some myth and they cry out as I watch and I hear them in vain - NOR DO I CARE - and they throw balls and kick bottles and they light firecrackers where they sit or drink their beverages with crooked arms twirling as they DRINK while they talk and all things at once and nothing matters NOTHING AT ALL “you want facts and information ? is that all ? the girl’s been dead for three days they said and they found her body over there underneath the new pilings where the jellyfish die and the fishermen up above on the high pier I see are washing their tools and the water splashing down is what made people look and they noticed something bobbing in the water something small and black and someone called the cops and by the time they’d gotten there it was identified as the missing six-year old from Catalpa Street but no one knew really where she lived and no one reported her missing just her friends who said ‘Carlita that is her!’ and the cops asked a million questions and then the newspaper came and that was all I saw she had on red pants and some sort of shiny blue jacket but otherwise she almost looked sleeping” and all that was on July 7th three days after the big fireworks display at that very spot (‘but what’s done in the dark is never seen in the day’) and for the most part everyone else had a very good time.
